You’re the Cure – the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s grassroots network – is recruiting volunteers to help fight heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers.

For more than 30 years, You’re the Cure has advocated for legislative policies that can help make citizens’ lives healthier.

In 2015, some successes included: A $2 billion increase for the National Institutes of Health; protection for healthy school meals standards; passage of the Every Child Achieves Act, which ensures physical education programs in school; and the addition of more than 40 cosponsors for the Furthering Access to Stroke Telemedicine Act.

Nationwide, successes included: Nearly 500,000 people gaining access to health insurance coverage through the expansion of the Medicaid program in Indiana, New Hampshire, Montana, and Alaska; Ten more states passing measures to screen infants for congenital heart defects; Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Illinois, Oregon, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota and West Virginia all passing legislation requiring CPR in Schools; and New Orleans went smoke free in its bars, restaurants and casinos.
