Fruits and vegetables are not only better for you than packaged foods – they’re also cheaper, according to a report released Thursday by the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Here are some examples the study noted:

  • a half-cup serving of apple cost $0.26, while one Fruit by the Foot roll cost $0.45
  • a half-cup of sweet potato cost $0.31, while a half-cup of Stovetop Stuffing cost $0.38
  • a half a cup of grapes cost $0.46, while a package of M&M’s cost $0.75 (the candy also has 230 calories, vs. 50 for the grapes)
  • a half cup of sliced cucumber cost $0.14, while an ounce of Lay’s potato chips – about 15 chips – cost $0.27 (the chips have 160 calories, vs. 5 for the cucumber)
