Springdale is the first city in Arkansas requiring that foods and drinks in vending machines located on city properties meet nutrition standards.
The rules now require:
- All food in the vending machines have zero grams of trans-fat and no more than 230 mg of sodium.
- A quarter of the food must have no more than 200 calories and contain less than 10 percent of calories from saturated fat and less than 35 percent of total weight from sugar.
- Half of all beverages must meet one of these requirements: 40 calories or less; 100 percent juice with no added caloric sweeteners; 100 percent vegetable juice containing less than 230 mg of sodium; or be fat-free or low-fat milk.
In addition, the total calorie content for each item sold should be displayed so that it’s easily seen by anyone interested in making a purchase.
Mayor Doug Sprouse said on the city’s website that the directive will offer healthier options to employees and residents of the city of 76,500 people.
