0412-Feature-Best Nonprofits_BlogDallas-based American Heart Association is among the 20 Best Workplaces in Health Care for 2016, announced Tuesday by Fortune and Great Place to Work.

“This prestigious recognition reflects the American Heart Association’s commitment to creating a culture that inspires our staff to fully engage in our work, which impacts the lives of people throughout this country and the world,” said AHA CEO Nancy Brown. “It is an honor for me to lead the AHA team, and every person in our organization shares in this recognition.”

The AHA ranked No. 16, based on data analyzed by consulting firm Great Place to Work that included an August 2015 survey of more than 800 AHA employees. The top honor went to Arlington, Texas-based Texas Healthcare Resources, which employs more than 18,000.

AHA supports employees by encouraging them to stay off email during its annual all-staff holiday break, according to the report. It provides funds for gym memberships, hosts workplace health screenings and provides in-house training through American Heart University. These factors led to 87 percent of workers calling it a great workplace.

“Everyone seems genuinely concerned about the mission and the accomplishments of the organization, which in turn means they are genuinely concerned about the overall health of the community,” said one worker quoted in Fortune.

In the final survey:

  • 96 percent of AHA employees said, “I feel good about the ways we contribute to the community.”
  • 95 percent said, “I’m proud to tell others I work here,” and, “People here are given a lot of responsibility.”
  • 93 percent said, “When I look at what we accomplish, I feel a sense of pride.”
  • 92 percent said, “I am able to take time off from work when I think it’s necessary.”

Overall, more than 34,000 employees from hospital systems, home healthcare providers, national healthcare associations and medical products distributors provided input for the survey.

The AHA was also recognized this month by NonProfit Times as the No. 1 workplace among large nonprofits, ranking No. 14 among all nonprofits.

To develop Best Nonprofits to Work 2016, NonProfit Times works with The Best Companies Group, using questionnaires, confidential employee surveys and outside contacts. The AHA has been included each year in the rankings since the report was first published six years ago.

The AHA has 156 offices nationwide and more than 3,000 employees.
